What you call a long intro is for me the main part of the track. Vom Himmel
Hoch sounds far better (and is much more KW-like then) in its short 4 minute
edit version (the silly unnecessary krautrock part in the middle was
judiciously removed).

The Philips contract ended (the deal = full rights back home to Kling
Klang). Then Ralf & Florian decided that from their obsolete Philips catalog
only Autobahn would survive (officially becoming their first album, see the
Catalogue) with a slightly updated sleeve/artwork (licence to EMI).
